The Sub-3 System™

The Sub-3
System™

A performance system built through experience, pattern recognition, and elite performance across 21 marathons. Five interconnected elements that deliver breakthrough performance.

This is not a training plan. It is not a collection of tips. It is a complete performance system that addresses every element that separates runners who break through from those who plateau. The gap is almost never fitness. It is execution, strategy, and mindset.

01
Intelligent Training
Structured progression, not random miles. Pre-training, build, and race-specific phases. Efficiency over volume. Most runners train too hard on easy days and not hard enough on hard days. Mike creates a genuine gap between paces.
02
Load & Recovery
Train at just-manageable intensity. Recovery is a performance tool, not a reward. Avoid hidden overtraining — the most common reason experienced runners plateau. Mike’s 80/20 principle creates true training separation.
03
Execution (The Key Differentiator)
Negative split strategy. Controlled start — build, do not burn. The Bolero Method: four race phases that build like a symphony to a fast finish. Small mistakes in execution equal big time loss. This is where most runners lose 10–15 minutes.
04
The Body System
Recovery protocols. Nutrition fundamentals. Injury prevention. Shoe rotation. The pre-race protocol refined over 21 marathons — kit laid out blindfold-ready, race won before the start line. Preparation as a competitive advantage.
05
Mindset
Discipline. Self-awareness. Self-trust. The Mental Teleport — projecting onto familiar training routes in the closing miles to reduce perceived effort. Resilience as training: setbacks are part of the programme, not interruptions to it. Performance is not just physical. It is identity.
"Small mistakes in execution equal big time loss. Most runners are not losing time in training — they are losing it in the first 10 kilometres of every race."
— Mike Sheridan · 6× Sub-3 Performer

The Bolero Method — Run a Marathon Like a Symphony

Mike’s race execution framework divides the marathon into four phases — each with a distinct purpose and energy profile. The result is a race that builds in power and finishes faster than it starts.

Phase 1
The Prelude
Miles 1–6. Controlled, disciplined. Bank energy, not time. Resist the crowd and the adrenaline.
Phase 2
The Cruise
Miles 7–18. Settle into race pace. Economical, rhythmic. Trust the training. Do not chase others.
Phase 3
Call to Arms
Miles 19–23. The banked energy is released. The pace lifts. This is where the race is won or lost.
Phase 4
The Finale
Miles 24–26.2. Everything left. Finish stronger than you started. Identity built through execution.
